New apple TV - how does the remote work?

My grandson set up my apple TV, but didn't leave the directions, and I can't figure out how to navigate around the TV screen using the remote. I tried using the four sides of the menu button, but that doesn't work. The play/pause button seems to work for some things, but I can't figure out what I'm doing.

How do I select? How do I go back? How do I move right on the screen? How do I move left? Up? Down?

I watched the Youtube video on it, but it was way too much information, way too fast. Isn't that a print version that I can look at and refer to?
