I am trying to find out what kind of iPad I have so I can buy a case.

I am trying to find out what kind of iPad I have so I can buy a case. When I look up the model number on settings/about it says MRJPCL/A. None of the iPads I look at when I search have a model number beginning with M. I have tried to look at the back of the case, but I can not make out the printing because of it's small size and because the case is copper coloured, so when I hold it up to the light to try to read the number I just get glare. I would appreciate anyone's help on this.

iPad, iOS 12

Apple, perhaps confusingly, identify models with two numbers. Both numbers can be seen in Settings; just tap model number in About to see them both.

One number, prefixed with “A” is a generic model identifier. The other number, is an order number that identified the exact configuration (colour, internal storage, WiFi or WiFi & Cellular etc.) - this number will stand with one of four letters:

  • M – Brand new device, meaning the device was purchased new
  • F – Refurbished device, meaning the device has been through refurbishing process
  • N – Replacement device, meaning the originally bought device was replaced by this model likely due to a service request
  • P – Personalized device with engraving, meaning the device was customized with an engraving on purchase

I hope this clarification is helpful to you.

Thank you for the response. My problem was that there is no number starting with an A on the "about" screen, only the M number and a serial number. I'm not sure why they even bother putting the number on the back of the case since it is so small that it is unreadable. However, using the help here, I was able to figure out that I had a generation 6, so I can now order my case.
