I am unable to remove an old phone number for iMessage/Facetime

I am unable to remove an old phone number for iMessage/Facetime having used all the suggestions on the website (switch both on/off, new password etc), is there a definitive way to do this?

iPhone XS, iOS 13

Try this method ....

Go to Settings > Messages and turn off iMessage.
Go to Settings > FaceTime and turn off FaceTime.
Restart your device.

Remove the temporary number from https://appleid.apple.com
