I have a red exclamation mark next to my iphone 6s plus's message icon. The red mark appeared today and all messages sent today went though. I can find no red exclamation in any of my messages.
I tried restarting. I also tried signing in and out of my apple account.
Any other ideas?

If you couldn’t find any messages that failed to send or other issue in Messages, go to Settings > Notifications > Messages and turn off Allow Notifications there. Restart your iPhone after this:
Turn Allow Notifications back on and see if the issue returns.
If it does, check for any updates to iOS and see if this helps:
Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
