How can I deregister an old number?

I am now confused. Please note: De-registering a number from iMessage is done online only when you do not have an iOS device. Or else
If you still have your iPhone, you can deregister iMessage with these steps:
Deregister iMessage on your iPhone or online - Apple Support
Insert the same SIM into your Android Phone. You may deregister iMessage online

You have to go to Settings>Messages and turn off iMessage
Are you able to receive normal SMS on your Android Phone from your friends? If yes, then it is already de-registered.
Done that the message never arrives
Tried that, then I remembered it was still on on my IPAD so thought if I turned that off it would allow me to delete the number; it didn't.
I have two numbers listed on my Iphone and I cannot remove the obsolete one. I was on the phone to apple support for 40 minutes yesterday to no avail.
