why does iphone show number on messages and calls instead of the contact name

It sounds like your iPhone shows the number for calls and messages but not the contact name. Be sure to check the effected contacts to make sure the number is added and correct. Otherwise there are some steps you can try to resolve this issue.
- Restart the iPhone
- Check for an update
Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
- Use Groups to determine where the contacts are stored. Then you can try removing the account and adding it again.
