Create New Apple ID and move content from another shared Apple ID

We got a MacBook Pro for my son for college. We want to create a new Apple ID just for him but then move content from our shared family Apple ID to his new one. How do we do that without losing content on his computer, phone, iCloud, etc.

After the ID change in the phone, he should be able to sync the iCloud data to the computer.

If 13 years old or older.

Apple ID - create a new.

Apple ID – Create

If under 13 years old, you will need to set up Family Sharing to create an ID.

Family Sharing and Apple ID for your child.

Family Sharing.

Family Sharing - Set up.

When changing to the new ID, there may be some data loss, but you can minimize it. If syncing photos with iCloud, ensure Optimization is turned off in Settings/Your Name/iCloud/Photos and/or in Photos/Preferences/iCloud. Then make sure full resolution photos are on the device/computer. When signing out of iCloud, if asked whether you want to retain data, choose yes. Messages conversations will be lost if they are addressed to the ID. See the article below for other places that the old ID should be removed. See Winston Churchill's response in the below discussion. Also set up Family Sharing to keep access to your apps/purchases.

Set up - your child’s iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

See How to create a new Apple ID https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204316and

See the data implications below.

Some of these things may apply even though not changing an Apple IDWhat to do after you change your Apple ID or password https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204071

Keep in mind that some things available under a first Apple ID will not be available under a new Apple ID. For example, you won’t be able to transfer anything purchased from the App and iTunes Stores to the new ID. And, there are other issues to be addressed.

And see what Eric Root says on this matter here  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251483565and

You also can set up family sharing between the IDs to share purchases made with them. I know you are familiar with family sharing, but here are the pertinent links.
