Photo uploads

Everytime I plug my phone in to my imac it transfers all photos. I only want the newest un-imported photos. I have one photo that is duplicated on my computer over 1000 times and can't figure out how to eliminate it. I have "transfer to mac or pc checked and icloud Photos checked. What else do I need to do to eliminate this issue or is it normal?
