Why do my Airpods disconnect when I get a phone call on my iPhone 11?

When I my Airpods connected to my iPhone 11, they will disconnect when I get a phone call and the audio options will come up on my iPhone screen. I will then have to reconnect my Airpods to continue with the phone call. Any way to avoid the extra step? IOS is up to date.
