Updating iOS utilizing Cellular Personal Hotspot

Can I update the ios on my iPhone 11 by connecting (via wifi) to my iPhone 8 that has Personal Hotspot Enabled and available to the iPhone 11?

I am in a remote location and have added a second line to increase my available Hotspot data to 220gb per month within my cellular plan. (Also utilizing the Sprint Magic Box).

My other devices; iPad, iMac Pro, AppleTV, Alexa all successfully connect to the internet via WiFi connection by accessing the enabled Personal Hotspot on either my iPhone 8 or 11.

I’m happy to report I have successfully updated my iPhone 11 using the Personal Hotspot from my iPhone 8 👍🏽

After giving it much thought…

Here’s how.

I plugged both the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 11 into my iMac via USB.

I then connected the iMac to the internet via the iPhone 8 Personal Hotspot.

Then using the finder interface on the iMac for the iPhone 11 I prompted the upgrade.

Success, the iPhone 11 has been upgraded using only the Personal Hotspot for internet access.

Given my remote location and the lack of a reliable/affordable ISP such solutions are invaluable.

Although my situation is a little unique with 2 iPhones and an iMac I’m hoping this solution might help someone else in a similar situation.

you need wifi to install a update personal hot spot will not work

Unfortunately, at present, an iPhone can be updated only over a WiFi Network. It cannot be updated over a hotspot issued by another Apple Device. Therefore, you will not be able to update your iPhone 11 by using your iPhone 8's hotspot.
