Apple silicon or intel?

hi, i was wondering whether the wait for Apple silicon is even worth it considering what i will be using it for.

As a comp sci student, i want to purchase a new Macbook to use for school and work related things (in the future). after WWDC i was wondering whether waiting for the apple silicon will make such a big difference in performance while programming and video editing (heavier tasks)...

i do see myself using apple based programs for creating applications and programs in the future and the talk of the new transition being so important made me wonder if i should wait for a high end non intel macbook? I do not really care to wait for one so time isn't really an issue for me.

Apple has previously released tools that allow the compiler to issue TWO different Binaries, one for each platform, which are provided to the customer together as a Universal binary. The customer's computer selects and executes the one appropriate for their hardware automatically. Last time, this process was completely seamless, and this time should be even better.

There is no point in waiting. Intel Macs work now, and will work for years to come.

Totally new hardware will always have some issues.

Your Mac will continue to run the MacOS that shipped in the box, and any software that runs under that version of MacOS, for as long as it can power on.

What you are asking about is how long future versions, which Apple has historically given away FREE to current Mac users, will continue to be available. In my opinion, you have been lulled into a sense of entitlement by Apple's generous policies. That is not a 'planned obsolecence' question, but more of a "How long will Apple keep pressing more and more marvelous free stuff into my hand" question.

No one can predict that answer.
