Deleting iCloud alias email problem

My wife has passed away and I want to delete her icloud email account. My email is the primary ID, hers appears to be an alias but when I go to iCloud Email preferences, accounts, it is there but not as an alias, and can't be closed. When I try and edit my ID it just says that this is an alias of my Apple ID email address.

I am confused, is there any way to change or remove her email address?

Thanks.

I am sorry for your loss.

Your deceased wife may have been using an alias of yours then. But, whatever, you can't deletes such an alias. Since she is deceased it won't be used again unless you use it.

But, see Use email aliases on iCloud.com https://support.apple.com/en-nz/guide/icloud-ipad/mm6b1a490a/icloud. If she was using this type of alias, then you can delete it.

Sorry for all the questions, I'm just trying to ascertain exactly what your wife's address was.

Q. I assume it was an iCloud address

Q. When your wife used too receive mail, did it used to come to the same mailbox as your iCloud address.

Not really sure yet if it was an alias, but in regard to whether they can be deleted, yes they can.

There can only be one primary email address, although there may be different versions of it if you have had an account going back beyond iCloud, i.e. george @ icloud.com, george @ me.com, or george @ mac.com. As such I would imaging that your wife's email address is an alias.

What does it say if you go to iCloud.com ➔ Mail ➔ Settings (gear icon) ➔ Preferences ➔ Accounts ?

Firstly, can I ask if your issue has been resolved, since it has been marked solved.

If not, then......

it would seem that your wife may not have been using an alias of your address.

Without giving real addresses, could you please explain exactly where you are trying to delete the address from, and what format your wife's address takes.

Sorry, Donv said it couldn't be deleted. I have been trying to delete her email address which is an iCloud address from mail, preferences, accounts with no luck. Also from manage my Apple ID, edit, apple account. When I try in the box Contactable at, the question mark by the side of my wife's iCloud email address says it is an alias of my email address

Ok, on that basis it seems it may have already been deleted as an alias. I assume therefore that the problem is that it (although possibly deleted as an alias) it is still associated with your Apple ID as a rescue access or something similar. If so you may have to replace it with something else rather than simply remove it from that field.
