External hard drive not recognised by MacBook 2020

I've just bought a new MacBook 2020 for my son and a Seagate external hard drive for back ups. I've just plugged in the hard drive for the first time and it doesn't show up in the Finder or in the Disk Utility. The device lit up when I plugged it in, so there's power and I can see it on the System Report in About This Mac. How do I get the Time Machine to recognise it?

Hi,

If a USB device doesn't work with Mac.

If it doesn't help, try resetting SMC which could solve the issue.
