How do I "edit name and photo"in Messages?

iPhone 7+ using 13.5.1 - Text messages come across with the phone number, not the name of the sender. What do I need to do to get names instead of the phone number? One article said to "edit the name and photo" section of Messages first . . . but it doesn't come up - says it's not available . . what's up?

Hello Dadrock33 ,

Thank you for following up.

First, to address the issue with not seeing a sender's name but instead seeing a phone number, has the sender or contact already been added to Contacts in your iPhone? If you haven't previously added them to Contacts, you won't see a name.

In reference the problem you're having with editing your name and photo under Settings > Messages, check to see that you have iMessage enabled under Settings > Messages. Also, check to see if you're signed in to your Apple ID under Settings (at the top of the page.) You can find more information in the "Sign in on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch" section here: Sign in with your Apple ID.

You may also want to check out the "Share your name and photo" section of this article: Send and receive text messages on iPhone.

Finally, check here for the differences between SMS and iMessages: About iMessage and SMS/MMS.

Take care.

Hello Dadrock33,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you're having trouble with messages showing the phone number, rather than the contact's name. We are happy to share information that may help.

First, make sure that the name and phone number are added to Contacts. Also, make sure that Contacts is enabled for the account from which the contact is synced. You can find more information here: Manage and delete contacts on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

If you're still experiencing this, please provide the following details:

-Does this happen with all contacts?

-If not, does this occur with SMS or iMessages?

-What steps are you taking to edit the name and photo section in Messages?

Take care.

Hello Dadrock33,

Let's keep working on this.

For one of the contacts that is showing a phone number instead of a name, if they send you an individual message, rather than reply in a group message, do you still only see the phone number? If so, try deleting the contact and adding it again: Manage and delete contacts on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Next, under Settings > Messages, and under Settings > your name, are both Apple ID email addresses the same?

Take care.

No, it doesn't happen with all messages . . .mostly with a group message.

Not sure if it is iMessages or SMS . . . . how do you tell the difference? It's the text messages in the panel at the bottom of the iPhone.

I go to general settings, then Share Name and Photo (it shows "off" on phone), screen says "Sharing Name and Photo not available" - Sharing Name and Photo is not available because iCloud and iMessage accounts are different or are not signed in." . . . and then I am supposed to click "OK"

Yes, all of the phone numbers that show up in the messages display are already associated with a particular name in my contacts list.

iMessage is enabled and I am also signed in on my Apple ID

""You may also want to check out the "Share your name and photo" section of this article"" . . . . . yeah, this is where the rub comes in . . . all the screen does is display that "something" isn't signed into . . . as I quoted earlier - the iCloud and iMessage accounts are different or are not signed in" . . . that's all it says.

The majority of the messages I get are green so it's SMS.
