I changed my Apple ID to a gmail account

I changed my apple ID to a gmail account at Appleid.apple.com and on each device. Now on my iphone and ipad the same thing has happened.

Under settings there is a an update, "update apple ID settings"

When I click continue, it still shows my old apple id email address and does not recognize my old apple id password or the new one.

Not sure how to officially switch over and complete the update.

Help please!

Some people have fixed this by signing out of iCloud, restarting their device, and then logging back in. That hasn't worked for everyone.
