MacBook Pro to external monitor problem

This is probably a dumb question. I have my brand new macbook pro hook up to an external monitor, thru HDMI to USBC adapter. I can see the desktop, but I can not see any files or folders or browsers on the monitor. It's just a blank desktop.

Any advice?

Good news is that you have the external display connected correctly. You are able to see your extended desktop on the external display. You have gotten this far and that is good. Everything appears to be working as expected.

You simply need to learn more on using external displays and setup. Apple makes things very easy to understand in this article that it published ➔ Use External Monitors with your Mac - Apple Support. Please review the information and instructions for an external display setup by clicking on that link. Thanks.
