It depends the iCloud mail address see https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201342 say example1@icloud.com is signed in system preferences > iCloud this will be a primary Apple ID , if you open appleid.apple.com and fill up the credentials to sign in the second mail address has to be first added and and then the primary mail id has to be removed by clicking on cross sign see the articles https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202667

I commented earlier on your post that I also am facing the same issue. Support said to just toggle It off i need it disabled for specific reasons. I also mentioned that I was hoping to move out some of my emails prior to doing that. I found a Senior Advisor that knew the trick and was able to do that. Now that I’m ready to disable it. I still can’t figure out know to disable it.

When the enable this account from IMAP account is unchecked the mail disappears from iCloud account from the mail application ( from the inbox ) , but when Apple ID and password is signed in www.icloud.com the mail is still saved on web iCloud account , you can select the mail or many mails and delete to trash / or create a folder there and drag and drop the mail in it .

The reason IMAP account is only synced with iCloud server account .
