You social security number is used to access your credit report. While it is possible, in theory, access it without the SSN, I don't know of any automated systems that can handle that. Courts have upheld that this is an acceptable use of the SSN.
they have to verify you are who you say you are for legal reasons. if you do not provide valid ID you cannot use the product.
