iMovie lagging

Hi, I just bought a 2020 MacBook Pro with 1tb storage space. My iMovie lags for a solid minute every command I give it. Even to click play, pause, cut, or move something around. Something that should have taken 2 minutes took me an hour of lag wait time. My 2015 MacBook works faster and is out of storage. There’s nothing downloaded on my Mac yet it’s literally less than a week old.

How can I fix this issue? I edit A LOT of videos..

Try resetting the System Management Controller:

Try resetting the NVRAM or PRAM, although this issue would be fairly rare:
