USB Connections.

I want to buy an external hard disk for backup of some videos. It comes with an ordinary usb cable (oblong). Can I use I use a USB-C to USB cable to connect it to my MacBook Pro, to transfer the files, as the computer does not have an ordinary USB port? Thanks.
