Catalina os

Catalina Install failed. Holding down cmd and r keys simultaneously on restarting brought up os utilities menu and Re-instal of previous Mojave os appeared to go ok but on re-starting and entering my password, mac stalls for a minute and then displays a no entry sign - white circle with diagonal line. Can you assist?

Hi dermot208,

Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities. We understand your Mac is starting to a prohibitory symbol after attempting to update to Catalina, then attempting to reinstall macOS.

"A prohibitory symbol, which looks like a circle with a line or slash through it, means that the selected startup disk contains a Mac operating system, but it's not a version or build of macOS that your Mac can use.

  1. Press and hold the power button on your Mac for up to 10 seconds, until your Mac turns off.
  2. Turn on your Mac and immediately press and hold Command (⌘) and R to start up from macOS Recovery.
  3. While in macOS Recovery, use Disk Utility to repair your startup disk.
  4. If Disk Utility found no errors or repaired all errors, take either of these actions:

If you still need help, please contact Apple Support."

You'll find additional information below.

Cheers!
