podcasts mixing with music on my ipod Nano 6G (2020 post-iTunes question)

Since iTunes disappeared and devolved into separate ApplePodcasts and Apple Music, I've had an issue syncing my iPod Nano 6G. Whereas before, my Podcasts appeared in the Podcasts section of my ipod, I now find that after syncing my Music section includes all of the data from my Podcasts. In other words, Podcast date is bleeding between the categories on my ipad. I used to have about 15-20 albums' worth of music on the iPod along with my regular Podcasts, but now that the Podcast data appears in the Music section, finding music by artist, for example, is nearly impossible since I have 200+ podcast episodes appearing there in the Music/artist and Music/album section.

Hi. Yes, I know how to sync using the new iTunes replacements. That's not the issue. My problem is that when I sync, all of the podcasts update but they also populate the Music section of my iPod. When I click on the Music tab, it appears as if it will sync the 10 or so albums that I've selected, it mixes them in with the list of podcasts. So for example if I have a few BBC podcasts, when I browse my Music section on the iPod I see BBC listed as a Music artist. With iTunes the podcasts stayed separate and only imported music tracks showed up in the Music section.
