BEWARE: iTunes 12.6.5.3 bricks phones when attempting to install iOS 13.5.1, requires install of latest iTunes to recover

BEWARE: I am using iTunes 12.6.5.3

It looks like this version is not supported for updating to iOS version 13.5.1

It would have been _really_ nice to have know this prior to this version of iTunes downloading and attempting to install said version, thereby bricking this new phone.

I now don't have the option to install the updated iOS over the network. This now forces me to install the latest version of iTunes in order to recover this phone.

I'm guessing that there probably was a warning, it's just that such warnings are easy to miss. Whether there is or not, Apple's advice (and the first thing they refer to) is always to use the latest version of their software. I think very manufacturer does the same. The fact that your phone will not talk nicely with iTunes is just a fact of life, not deliberate.

More to the point, why are you reluctant to update iTunes to the latest version?
