Mail storage never gets lower?

I have a MacBook Pro, Mid 2014. I'm using the native mail app and have 6 accounts added (5 Gmail and 1 Yahoo). According to About This Mac > Storage, my mail is sitting at 26.82 GB. I can't figure out how to clean up this data and free up space. I delete messages, I've removed one of my accounts and the storage amount stays the same. Suggestions?

yup, trailhiker. 5 Gmail and 1 Yahoo account, huh? Yikes !! This is going to be a pain in the butt, but it's the only way I know how to do this. using your web browser, Safari, or whatever, log into each one of your Gmail accounts, shift click on each message so that it's highlighted, there should be a checkbox on the left hand side of the column, and then click on delete at the top of the webmail page. Keep on doing this, about 40 messages at a time until they are deleted off of the mail server. then logout of that Gmail account, and login to the next one, and rinse and repeat as necessary. . here's how to do that from the Mail app itself (link)(

under mailbox behaviors, you can choose to leave your message/mail on the server for up to a month and then delete it, or delete it sooner, or even delete it when you close Mac Mail.

Thanks John for this - but not sure I explained the problem - I know how to delete emails - but according to my hard drive storage, my mail is taking up 26.34 GB on the Mac. Just today, I removed all of my accounts from the mail app, and it STILL shows that I'm taking up that much storage space. I don't have any mail accounts in the app, but it still says mail is taking up this space... any idea what's going on?
