Use old Apple Mail alias for new Apple ID

I recently deleted an alias I had for my son so his emails would come to me. He's a big boy now and wants the alias to be his Apple ID but I get a "can't be used" message when I try to create a new account using the old alias.

Any ideas?

This situation often develops if you are trying to use an Apple ID that is, in some way, associated with your current or a prior Apple ID of yours (e.g., as a reachable at email address or a notifications email address--neither your case). Note that you can't use the one your are trying to use until an uncertain period has passed--sometimes reputed to 30 day and sometimes 1 year. Also, I have seen that you never can use such an email address again. The last two times I saw someone claim a time period it was “up to 30 days.” I believe that up to 30 days is the current answer. But, you can contact Apple support to check out the currently quoted wait period.
