How do I play ogg and ogv files on iPad?

I cannot play ogg or ogv files on iPad. Specifically, sound and video files from Wikipedia that uses ogg formats to avoid copyright issues. It would seem that iPad is natively incapable. I have installed VLC, which can, theoretically, play them but then cannot find downloaded files. On my PC they play automatically from the link but only after installing protocols to do so. I have asked around and it seems that this is a very common problem and no solutions. Any ideas?

When using Safari on iPad, first try playing the OGV or OGG files used on Wikipedia. Some video files may be using ogv.js in the TimedMediaHandler extension.

With the VLC for Mobile app downloaded you can create or download the Open In VLC shortcut for the Shortcuts app to access from the Share Sheet in Safari. The example webpage.

Tap and hold on an OGV or OGG file link:

Tap Share:

Tap Open In VLC:

The shortcut will run:

The VLC app will open and begin playing the video:

When the video is finished a thumbnail will appear on the video page and you can tap on the Safari link in the upper left to return to Safari:
