mac does not recognize ipod touch

Just bought a new iPod Touch, which I got because I have organized playlists on my Mac that I wish to load onto the iPod and be able to listen to them when no WiFi is available. Both iTunes and the Mac do not recognize the iPod, though when I go to System Information/USB the iPod shows up. I've had three chat sessions with Apple Support to no avail and I've tried every possible fix I could find online. Operating systems are up to date on both devices. Any ideas?

iPod, iOS 13
