How do I get iMac to play Bose Companion 2 Series III speakers?

Solved! My equipment: iMac mid 2011 21.5" 2.5 GHz Intel Core I5

Everything was hooked up correctly in System Preferences (Sound) and Bose Cord to HEADPHONE output (Far left facing back of computer)

Tried this: Made sure it was plugged in ALL THE WAY. Restarted computer and hit the volume buttons on computer and on speaker.

I think the thing that finally made them work was hitting the volume buttons on the keyboard.

I found this hint on another BOARD after reading several suggestions. Hope it helps you - looks like several have this problem! NICE SOUND from small speakers. Almost as good as my old Soundsticks - but those had a Woofer and were better.

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.13

Note: Headphones should show up in System Preferences if you are plugged into headphones on the back of your iMac.

Your sound level in system preferences should be set at 3/4 according to Bose. Then adjust volume on speakers or keyboard.

Hit volume buttons on KEYBOARD if no sound. I also restarted computer.
