How do I... (Airport Time Capsule hard drive data recovery)

...recover data after a factory-default reset? My cable provider messed up the permissions on the files on my time capsule so I had to reset it, disconnect it from the network, give it its own WiFi, so I can reconnect to it separately from cabl

This question is about the Airport Time Capsule that my MacBook named "Titan" used to back up to that no longer works because of the situation I describe in this post title.

MacBook, macOS 10.15

But it had file copied to it that were sitting there "beside" the sparse bundle" file.

The picture is getting messy..

From the above comment it seems you directly copied files from the Macbook to the TC hard disk.

Did you then upgrade the laptop to Catalina.. as that is bound to cause issues??

using Migration Assistant with Catalina might restore the permissions and restore access to my files. Does that sound closer to a solution?

Migration Assistant will copy the files from Time Machine backup to the computer. It will not copy anything outside of the Time Machine backup. Did you delete the files copied to the TC from the Macbook? If so they are not included in the last backup even if they are in the history. Migration Assistant cannot restore files from history .. only from the last backup. Time Machine cannot backup files located on the target drive or any network drive.

Recovery of these files outside of the Time Machine Sparsebundle will require manually copying them after changing permissions.

Let me suggest a few things.

#1 It is really hard to get permissions to change on a network drive. And if the files have no backup you should do an archive of the TC now. Archive will use a USB drive of equal or greater size than the TC disk and HFS+ formatted. It will take up to a day for 2TB. More for 3TB.

#2 Plug that USB hard disk into any computer and you should be able to fix permissions directly from Finder, and copy the files to the computer.

#3 You can use migration assistant to recover files to a computer running catalina.. although it may take a bit of work to do it and migration has its own issues.

Read the Apple documentation on migration.

And just leave the Mac Pro out of it since it was never an originator of backups to that Time Capsule anyway?

That is up to you.. migration requires the computer is running the same or later OS than what you used for the backup.

#4 There is another way if you wish to use the Mac Pro and that is Time Machine in Recovery and recreate the boot disk of the laptop as it was before you lost the files you want. This can be done from any computer so whichever is most convenient and has the resources you need.

#5 The is a trick to get around permissions I explained in other threads.. but you need to use Airport Utility 5.6.1

YMMV and a backup of the contents of the drive is wise if there is no other backup to these files.

There is a permissions fix in the old airport utility where you can add guest access.

Your first problem is to run 5.6.1 airport utility.. you need older Mac OS.. early Lion.. or special script from internet I cannot post URL but just google for

Launcher for AirPort Utility v5.6.1

It still works for me even on High Sierra.. although it was not so straight forward. Any windows computer you can use.. or bootcamp partition on a Mac. Mojave and especially Catalina are unlikely to work even though the download is available.

Once you access 5.6.1 airport utility on any Mac or Windows computer.. does not matter which.. go to the Disks tab, File Sharing.. by default Airport Disk Guest Access is Not Allowed.. change it to Read and Write.. and click update.

The change will take just a few seconds. This may have multiple affects I cannot predict. But it does offer one easy way out of your problem.. IF IT WORKS!! Many people have tested it and yes it does work.. but take care this is not your only source of the files.

To gain access to files copied directly to the TC this is my top rated method.. however dirty it looks.

NOTE.. once you recover the files.. you have now changed access permissions and really should erase the drive and start over.

I would reset the TC to factory.

None of the contents of the hard disk are harmed.. altered or changed in anyway.

It simply removes the restrictions caused by user passwords. So the disk is then accessible to Airport Utility and will make it available to access for guests.

Exactly what happens next depends on OS you use.. if the Mac Pro has issues try it on a computer with later OS.. but my experience is guest access gives me full access to files copied to the TC. It won't allow access to Time Machine backups made by later OS in Time Machine.. although you should be able to open them in Finder.

As btw.. I recommend people do not use user passwords in TC.

I know that you have used it and think it works better.. but it is done at a level that really does not protect anything and the issue with security is done by apple deliberately. Later OS are just more secure.. that means less ability to open from a different computer. Since a reset removes all trace of the user restrictions and there is no actual changes made on the disk permissions I doubt it is doing what you think it is.

Can you mount the TC disk in Finder?

If so can you show me what you are seeing.. take a screenshot without giving away anything private.

It should be possible to see the sparsebundle files on the TC disk.

If you created the backup using Macbook as per your first post and are now trying to open it in Mac Pro as you are using here then you will have permissions issues.. In later Mac OS Apple stopped people easily opening Time Machine backups in a different computer. You can recover data by using Migration Assistant.

If you created this backup with the Mac Pro and now cannot access it any longer.. there is a way to repair the permissions depending on the Mac OS version you are using.

So what Mac OS version do you run on the Pro? You also need to explain what the Macbook in the first post is using? And are you trying to open a backup from a different computer to the one that created the backup?

Then I will use the Airport Utility 5.6.1. to reset the permissions using Guest mode on my Mac Pro which is running Lion. That's the easiest solution I think. Then I'll copy the files to another USB connected drive. It's 3TBs. Then I'll erase the Time Capsule and start over and just use it for backup only, not to copy files. I have plenty of USB drives in external enclosures for that now. When I bought the Time Capsule I didn't have all of those. Also, I will set it in that other mode. The one where you tell it which users can access it. Not the disk password or device password. That's what I think led to the permissions problem in the first place with the older model Time Capsule. Because my other three still don't have a problem. I'll let you know how it goes.

Sorry but there is no way I can think of that the Cable provider could mess up permissions on the TC hard drive.

You can certainly lose connection to the TC itself .. that is surely probable with Catalina OS. Loads of people are having this issue now.

The fact that you have now disconnected it from the network and set up in standalone is certainly going to make it more difficult to access. You will need to swap your computer from the main network to the TC wifi to actually have a hope of accessing the files. This will stop backups happening and really make it very difficult.

It is much better to get the TC back onto the network.

Give us details.

What model is the TC?

Give us a screenshot of the current setup.

What is make and model of the main router or modem?

I have gave it its own WiFi network and connected to that using a Mac Pro. That way it's only connected to one computer and I can work with it safely. Here's a screenshot of my setup. It's been set to Factory-Default reset. But I haven't used the default password of "public" to access it or anything. I've just continued to use the old one. It keeps asking if I want to use the previous settings but because it's not connected to the internet, just to the Mac Pro through it's own WiFi (without being connected to a DHCP server on the other side) it just sits there with the amber light on.

I think you're right. Because I have three other Time Capsules. They are newer models and all three of them use "Login as Registered User" and they still work. But with this older one, the one having the problems it lost its permissions. The difference is that the older one was set to either disk password or device password. But it wasn't set to the one that lets you set a user. I want to reconnect it to the MacBook that originally was backing up. And it wasn't until I removed the Time Capsule from Time Machine backing up that I ran into problems. So I think the sparse bundle file is still on the Time Capsule but because of permissions I can't see anything even from the MacBook that originally was backing up. It couldn't complete a backup and it got all messed up. But it had file copied to it that were sitting there "beside" the sparse bundle" file. So those files are the ones that I really need. It sounds like hooking up the problem Time Capsule to the original MacBook and using Migration Assistant with Catalina might restore the permissions and restore access to my files. Does that sound closer to a solution? And just leave the Mac Pro out of it since it was never an originator of backups to that Time Capsule anyway?

I'm traveling right now but when I get back I'm going to use the connection to the Mac Pro to set the disk in the time capsule to Guest Access Read and Write. Now will that make the copied files accessible all of a sudden even though right now on the Mac Pro it just shows a big folder called Time Capsule with nothing in it? And should I set the secured disk password to "device password" or "Time Capsule password." I had to turn off the WiFi and set the time capsule in Bridge mode even to get to the options shown in your screen shot so there is no "Use WiFi Password to Access Disk" option to choose like it is in the screenshot.
