Cannot access email via HughesNet

When I try to access my iCloud email account from my Mac using my HughesNet internet access, I get the following "Online Status" message: 'Mail was unable to connect to server “p38-smtp.mail.me.com” using SSL on the default ports. Verify that this server supports SSL and that your account settings are correct.'


I can access my iCloud email from my Mac using my iPhone as Hotspot via the Verizon Cellular network.


Some days it works fine via HughesNet. HughesNet tech says it is an Apple problem. Is it? Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

We see that you're having an issue with being able to connect to your iCloud email account when using HughesNet internet access, but are able to always connect when using your iPhone as a personal hotspot.

We're glad to help figure out what's going on.

Since it does work correctly on some days, it would see that your settings are correct, and more isolation is needed to find out what's going on.

  • When did this issue begin happening?
  • Is anything different from when it works and when it doesn't, such as your physical location?
  • When connected to the internet with HughesNet, are you able to use your email from the iCloud website?

Thanks for your reply. We have not changed any settings. And I'm pretty much convinced that it is not an Apple problem. I think it is a coax cable/connector issue possibly combined with intermittent signal strength(?) issues from the HN Satellite that I understand covers most of Western North Carolina west of Charlotte. I'll be having a serious talk with HN Tech Support tomorrow and hope that something good will come from that.
