Recorded audio message without my knowledge

i sat down to supper. My iPhone screen I guess was on and Messages must’ve been open because I had been messaging my sister. My iPhone was on my lap. I ate my supper with both hands—knife in one and fork in the other. When I got up I noticed a seven-minute recorded audio message had been sent to my sister!! I listened to it and it was seven minutes of conversation with my husband as we ate! How in the world did that happen??? To record an audio message in Messages you have to hold the microphone icon all the time or it stops recording! Can someone explain this phenomenon? It’s very unsettling to think this can happen without your knowledge.

Hi ConLorMar,

We understand iPhone inadvertently recorded an audio message.

It is possible that foreign material on your iPhone display may have triggered the audio message feature. It is also possible to trigger the audio message feature to continue recording without holding by sliding your finger away from the display whilst recording - this is not a feature but can happen depending on the interaction with the multi-touch display.

We would recommend reviewing this article: Cleaning your iPhone to ensure there is no foreign material on your display.

Hope this helps!

Thank you very much Starr for responding! I think you hit the nail on the head. I didn’t close the Message screen when I sat down to have a bite to eat, putting my iPhone on my lap. Most likely my finger/thumb slid on the recording button as I took my hand away from the phone. Seven minutes into our supper we decided it was too hot on the balcony and got up to go indoors, and likely at that point when I picked up the phone on my lap my thumb touches the up arrow and the recording was sent. There wasn’t any foreign material on the iPhone, I’m sure, because I am meticulous with my phone.
