Upgrade from OS X Mountain Lion

I'm trying to upgrade from OS X Mountain Lion on a 2012 Mac Book Pro that I would like to use for Google Meet. I have already spoken to Apple Support and did a command reinstall. I tried to download El Capitan, but it states it won't recognize. I understand that I can't upgrade to the newest operating system directly.
