Upgrade from OS X Mountain Lion

I'm trying to upgrade from OS X Mountain Lion on a 2012 Mac Book Pro that I would like to use for Google Meet. I have already spoken to Apple Support and did a command reinstall. I tried to download El Capitan, but it states it won't recognize. I understand that I can't upgrade to the newest operating system directly.

I tried to upgrade to El Capitan. I was able to download it, but when I tried to upgrade it I got the message "not recognized".

If your Mac is currently running Mountain Lion, it should offer either Mac OS X 10.11.6 El Capitan, macOS 10.13 High Sierra OR the very latest version of macOS Mojave, as possible macOS upgrade paths.
