Any way to get pics from iphone 8 while in recovery mode?

Any way to get pics from iphone 8 while in recovery mode? Can't do software update because not enough storage on phone. My father-in-law died last year and there's lots of pics/videos of him that weren't backed up. My wife is devastated.
