Apps freeze and overwhelm CPU when I save images

I am having issues with apps freezing while using 99% CPU power when I try to save an image to my drive. It started with Safari – when I right click a photo to save it, Safari freezes. I then have to force quit the app to restart. The same thing happens in Chrome and now also when I save attachments in Mail. What to do?!? 😳

I am running on macOS Catalina 10.15.4

First, restart your mac.

If the issue persists:

1) see if the problem also occurs when booted in Safe Mode

2) see if the problem also occurs when booted normally, and logged in to a new user account

3) Please run Etrecheck and post its full report here. Use the "additional text" button and paste the report into the text box.
