AirPods popping out of the case/refuse to stay in

My AirPods seems to have a reversed polarity and do not want to be put in the case. I have checked the serial numbers of both the case and AirPods themselves and they are genuine apple products. The AirPods themselves are gen 2 and the case is gen 1. I’ve seen people do this before and I am sure that this is not the issue. I’ve tried the AirPods in another case that is gen 2 but they also seem to pop out. I cannot use the AirPods because of this. Does anyone know how to fix this?
