my Daughter died last year and I would like to try to use her Apple TV. When I go to settings, it won’t let me do anything. It says no internet connection. aldo, shen I try to put in the seriel number on the Apple site, it says it’s not a valid number. Any help would be appreciated. Thx.

It is best practice reset or restore the software to factory settings on hardware for a new owner. Then the new owner can set it up “as new”.

The serial number for the device isn’t needed to operate it. Not sure what your intention was.
A full serial number would be a combination of 12 numbers and letters. Check Coverage - Apple would tell you that a 2nd generation Apple TV is very old (2010–2012) for electronics, and long past its service period.

Do you have a phone that you could use to set up a Wi-Fi hotspot to see if the Apple TV will connect to that?
I do recall there were a lot of second generation Apple TV's that the wifi cards failed in. I did have a list of their serial numbers but don't anymore.
What happens when you try to connect to the internet, does it see any networks?
