ipad update

I am trying to update my Ipad from itunes on my pc and it has been stuck for nearly 2 hours say 'Itunes is updating the software on this Ipad' the Ipad itself is no longer showing the update. i can not exit Itunes because i will have to restore the Ipad and i am worried i will lose the data on the Ipad. any suggestions?
