The latest security update keeps failing when preparing the update I attempted to install the latest security update numerous times. As soon as it download and then gets to the step of preparing the update, I receive an error message that the update failed.

Forget trying to do the update through System Preferences> Software Update.

Do this instead.

https://support.apple.com/kb/DL2042?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

Once downloaded, double-click to install.
