recording from an av receiver to my imac

I want to record my vinyl collection onto my imac. I bought an av to usb cable and hooked it up, but th imac doesn't recognize it. I've tried going into audio MIDI setup, but again it does not see the receiver.

Do I need an app that will allow the computer to see the receiver? I've tried GarageBand.

I use Os 10.15.5. My receiver is an older Yamaha,v595.

The issue is that the USB interface on the receiver a host USB

and the Mac is also a host USB and therefore the two cannot

be connected. The USB on receivers are fore things like iPods,

iPhones, USB drives, etc.

The only way to go from the receiver to the Mac is with an

analog to digital converter to USB. There are literally thousands

of such devices ranging from cheap to extremely expensive.

Just do a search on Amazon or Google for Audio to USB converters.

An example, this one is a good quality that will take turnable inputs

directly and is under $100.

They have two others that are a bit lower in price but would

connect directly to your receivers line outs.

Is there any reason you couldn’t just plug your turntable into your iMac? Of course you will need a preamp with a USB output. See if you can set the line in to be usb in audio midi setup. What kind of cable/adapter are you using? I’m into simple and cheap so I use audacity which is free. I bought a cheap USB turntable- it worked-wasn’t great -but it worked. You get what you pay for...I think it came with ion audio’s ez vinyl/tape software so maybe try that. Sorry I don’t know GarageBand.
