sharing media from iphoto into imovie

Background: I have a 2015 macbook pro. Honestly it's pretty slow and I feel like it needed a tune up and to be cleared of space a long time ago, but I update date it regularly.

Issue: I'm trying to get video and photo footage from iphoto into imovie. Dragging the videos over just turns them into photos. highlighting them in iphoto and double clicking for "edit in imovie" does nothing, "sharing" to imovie does nothing. Going to imovie and trying to find my iphoto library gives me random old photos and never shows up to date albums or media. The only option I've found is dragging media onto my desktop first one at a time, naming it so I know what number clip it is, then dragging to imovie and that feels like a ridiculously slow option. I need to drag a large number of clips over to imovie without them getting out of order otherwise I'm going to waste many hours of my life.

Please help.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.14

Are you using iPhoto or the Photos for Mac app? Since your OS is Mojave I assume that you are using Photos 4.

The standard way of importing photos and videos from the Photos app into iMovie is to click on the Photos item in the iMovie media sidebar and drag the clips and photos in from the photos and videos that will be displayed in the media browser. For this to work your Photos app general preferences must be set to designate the Photos library as the system Photos library.

When "use as system Photo library" is greyed out, that means that the library is already your system photos library. You don't need to do anything further.

Instead of All Photos you might try some of the other categories to see if the photos/videos appear. Also, any photos/videos that are stored in the cloud would not show up. You would need to download them to your physical Photos library. When using iCloud Photos with optimized storage the media won't be displayed in iMovie.
