I cannot log into iMessage on my iPad

After a recent update, I have not been able to sign into iMessages/FaceTime on my iPad. I have not changed my password and it seems to be working on my MacBook and iPhone XR with no problems. Any ideas?

If you can't send or receive messages on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

This does not work because I cannot get past the sign in stage. I enter the same password & appleid used on my Mac and my iPhone but it does not let me login. I just get the message "Verification Failed - Your Apple ID or password is incorrect."
