Macbook and ipod Nano -hanging at Loading

We have a 2013 Macbook Air running Catalina 10.15.5.

We also have an ipod Nano.

For some reason it has stopped loading when connected. It worked fine up until approx 6 weeks ago, but now, when you plug the Nano in via USB it recognizes the ipod and its name fine but stops at the 'Loading' screen, with the rotating loading icon.

I have tried:

-rebooting ipod

-rebooting computer

-exactly same configuration, cable etc into another Macbook running the exact same OS and it works fine, immediately.

Any clues?

thanks in advance,

Mark

Hey maximark,

Thanks for those details. The issue is definitely isolated to just one Mac. Did you try this in safe mode as well? Make sure you try loading the iPod in safe mode on your Mac and if that doesn’t work, test in a new user account as well:

Do you have any security software installed or firewalls running on your MacBook Air? If so, uninstall that and see if this helps at all.

Regards.

Hey there maximark,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. We understand you’re having some issues using your iPod nano with your MacBook Air as expected. We’ll be happy to help.

You’ve done some great troubleshooting so far. Have you tried another USB port or cable on the Mac that is having issues? Try that and see if this has any impact on the issue.

If those steps didn’t help, reset the SMC and NVRAM on your Mac:

Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac

Then boot into safe mode and see if it loads up as expected there:

We hope this helps.

Take care.

Dear Pse Dye,

Thank you very much for taking the time to try to help.

I tried the processes you suggest and it still isn't working.

Here is a list of what I have tried:

Different cable

Different Computers (tried it in 2 other Macs, it worked fine)

On the mac where it doesn't load properly:

RESET SMC

RESET NVRAM /PRAM

REINSTALLED OS

and just in in case, I restored the ipod to factory default.

It still doesn't work.

To be clear, when you look at the ipod in the finder window, it sees it ok, it see's its name, size and everything. It just sticks at the 'loading' window.

Any other ideas would be very welcome- its a bit of a mystery! thanks
