I have a late 2013 iMac which has been running on Yosemite for years. In the past few weeks web use on Safari has been atrocious. Latest problem is that whenever I click on a link, I either get a pop up from safari saying do i want the link to open in another link or the link is highlighted in blue. With a 2013 iMac and 2011 microsoft office tools, will i blow up my computer if i update the OS? Are there other options to fix this?

Depends how far you update it, the less the better for old apps generally, but...

Modern Browser that works in 10.11 & up...

Look into the Free LibreOffice, it handles MS Office files…

Apple macOS (Mac OS X)

The software and hardware prerequisites for installing on a Apple macOS computer are as follows:

  • LibreOffice 6.3.x: macOS 10.10 (Yosemite) or higher
  • LibreOffice 6.2.x: macOS 10.9 (Mavericks) or higher
  • Intel processor
  • 512 MB RAM
  • Up to 800 MB available hard disk space
  • 1024x768 graphic device with 256 colors (higher resolution recommended)

It is a recommended best practice to back-up your system and data before you remove or install software.

Browsers are regularly updated for various reasons including security, so a version that worked in Yosemite will be "retired" at some point. I'm surprised yours has worked this long. Yosemite was 10.10.x and we are at 10.15 with the next one in the works. I would not recommend this (because there hasn't been a security update for your version of Safari for some time), but you can try a different browser. However, the current version of others probably will not work on your Yosemite. The 2013 imac can handle Catalina, but be sure to check how much RAM you have: max it out as the newer OS versions want more RAM.

FWIW, you can forget about MS that old. You will need to update that and probably others. Catalina is only compatible with 64 bit apps, so you may have others as well., you can check them here:
