Apple Pencil is not connecting to my iPad Air

My Apple Pencil (1st gen) is not connecting to my IPad Air (3rd gen)? I let my pencil charge both through my Ipad and the adapter. My Ipad is working fine but the pencil will not connect. I just purchased these items for school. They should work just fine. I had to buy them online because of COVID19. If the Apple Store was open I would never have this problem.

There is a known issue when connecting an Ipad Air 3rd Generation and 1st Generation Pencil. The way to resolve the issue is to connect and disconnect power to the iPad then connect the pencil via the lightning port and this should start the pairing request. I have confirmed it worked for me.
