How can I transfer my photos from my phone to a flash drive. When I connect my phone with cable to computer they don’t show up.

If you do not want to import the photos from the iPhone into the Photos.app, you can also use Image Capture on a Mac. With Image Capture you can download the photos to any folder you select. or import them to Photos.
But the photos need to be actually on your iPhone and not in iCloud. If your iPhone should be syncing with iCloud Photos Library and the iPhone is using the "Optimise iPhone Storage" option the photos may not be on the iPhone but only in iCloud, and then you cannot download them from the iPhone but should download them directly from iCloud.
