pros/cons of iCloud vs Apple server

I have a couple of Apple laptops and I want to share files between them. I set up remote management to be able to share screens and I can copy text from one computer to the other, but I am unable to copy files from one computer to the next. I tried File Sharing and that didn't seem to work. It would be nice if I could just store these files to a server so that I don't have local copies on each laptop. I'm not sure I trust the security on iCloud. Any comments on security concerns regarding using iCloud or subscribing to the apple server?
