Cannot open Mail. Sent round and round with password demands

I have tried to open mail and all I get is a choice of providers from which I choose iCloud. Entered my account and password and clicked ok. The screen went back to choice of providers and again asked for account and password. Round and round in circles and the same thing happened every time. Can anyone help?

Are you running any anti - virus programs? Using a VPN?

Try setting up another admin user account in System Preferences/Users & Groups to see if the same problem continues. Please post back on whether or not this worked. Also try the Safe Mode. Please post back on whether or not this worked.

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown. If the log won’t post, try posting it in Pastebin and provide a link in a reply. After pasting the report in a PasteBin page, go to the top of the page, and copy the address in the URL bar. Paste that in a new reply.        Pastebin.

This may be your problem, an updating Apple ID settings problem. Apple is aware of the problem.

Note that some have solved the problem by signing out of iCloud, restarting their devices, and signing back in

I suggest you use my search link (update apple id settings) in trying to solve your problem. You will see a number of links that are related to it (some dealing with iPhone/iPads explicitly others with Macs alone). But, note that I have not seen a definitive solution for it.

iMac running Catalina. Mail has worked perfectly up until today and all of a sudden had to choose provider (iCloud) and had to sign in with password. I think I signed in about 30 times with more or less the same result. Sometimes it told me my password was incorrect so I have also changed that twice. No difference. Can open mail on my MacBook Air!
