activation lock came on without me asking for it, locked out now

out of the blue the activation lock came on.

it's asking for my email and password for an old yahoo account.

I have a new Apple ID but it won't accept that.

I decided to remove it from my list of devices but that didn't help either.

Why did this happen? because I DIDN'T upgrade and want to brick my iPad Air 1? bog it down with software meant for the 2020 model? Please help!

If you are locked out of your Apple ID account you can go to https://iforgot.apple.com

This will provide you with the recovery steps you put in place for this situation.

 if you are the original owner, contact Apple. Apple can remove the Activation Lock if provided the required paperwork. Either take the device, the original purchase receipt with the serial number, and a photo ID to the nearest Apple Store (if it has reopened)
