Apple ID and password

I changed both my Apple ID and my password on my Mac yesterday. Everything went smoothly. I received two email confirmations of the correct change. My iPhone is now prompting me to sign in with my password for my old Apple ID. When I put in old password it won’t take it. When I put in new password it won’t take it. I’m not locked out yet but I dare not try anything else, least I will be. What is the solution?

First, use What to do after you change your Apple ID or password https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204071

__________

And, does your problem arise when updating apps. Then, this could be your problem.

What to do when the Mac App Store shows a different Apple ID for software updates https://www.macworld.com/article/3267709/mac-app-store-apple-id.html. This document refers to a prior owner, but is also applies to cases where a current owner's old Apple ID is the problem.

Basically, If an app is purchased/downloaded using one Apple ID, then you can't update it with with another Apple ID. The app is inextricably linked to the first Apple ID. You'll have to delete it and repurchase/download it again with the second Apple ID unless you use family sharing (see below).

As an alternative to deletion, you can set up family sharing between the IDs to share purchases made with them. See:

Family Sharing  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201060

Set up Family Sharing https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201088

__________

And, you might be in this unfortunate position, dealing a forgotten new password.

See: If you forgot your Apple ID password https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201487

You also can use Having trouble signing in/iForgot https://iforgot.apple.com/password/verify/appleid to recover it.

And you will need to see If you forgot the answers to your Apple ID security questions https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201485

Before trying to answer your security questions is very important that you think about your questions, including your birth date, and their answers carefully and try to recall all details you can. If you don't answer them correctly enough, then you easily can lose control of your account.

I think your account is going to end up being disabled (as you mentioned) if you pursue matters as above. See If your Apple ID is locked or disabled https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204106

And, thus, you will need to try to recover your account if you want to keep using it. See Recover your Apple ID when you can’t reset your password https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204921.

If necessary, if you are the original owner, contact Apple. Apple can remove the Activation Lock if provided the required paperwork. Either take the device, the original purchase receipt with the serial number, and a photo ID to the nearest Apple Store (if it has reopened)
