Playback of 4K on mid-2015 MBP gets progressively worse. What's to do?

Hi

Playback of 4K clips in the FCPX timeline on my mid-2015 MBP always starts out fine but after a bit gets progressively worse till it reaches a point of skipping segments in playback.

My analogy is: Once it's mouth gets full it can't talk. Seems like there should be something I can do to improve that. Maybe delete prefs. Maybe restart. Tho I wouldn't be crazy about doing either as often as it seems I would have to.

Suggestions?

If you're using integrated graphics I'd suggest working with proxy media. If it goes ok for a while the media is probably ok; the codec and the bit depth would give problems pretty quickly.

We need some more information to help you. Do you have background rendering turned off in preferences? Are you using proxies or reading the original media? Is e media on your internal drive or external? How large is the media drive?

What's the external drive exactly, SSD, spinner, spin speed? What are the specs of the 4K media including the video bit rate. You might have to work with proxy files. Which MBP is this exactly? Separate graphics card? How much VRAM?

Hi Tom,

MBP: Mid-2015

VRAM: 2 gb

No separate graphics card

External drives are spinners, 7200 rpm.

4K: 3840x2160, 100MB/sec

To reiterate: Playback starts out ok, deteriorates till skipping.

Reading original media

Media on external drive

External drive: 1TB, probably 700gb free

Quality: Better performance
